Building a miniature escape room

I led a seven-person team that combined microcontroller-based puzzles into a working miniature escape room. The team earned champion recognition and took the project to university showcases and outreach events.

Turning separate puzzles into one experience

The Design and Innovation Project module asked our team to build around an escape-room theme. Several teammates were new to microcontrollers. We developed smaller interactive projects and brought them together as one playable miniature escape room.

The challenge was integration: the individual components needed to work as a coherent game. My role was to lead the group as we combined those contributions into the finished model.

Electronics behind the game

The escape room used an RFID guard pass to unlock an analogue control, an Arduino connected to an OLED display through a plug-in connector, and a piezo buzzer producing different tones. These elements made electronics part of the players’ interaction with the puzzles.

The completed model brought microcontroller inputs, display output and physical interaction into a compact tabletop experience.

Recognition and public demonstrations

Our Escape Game Design & Implementation team won the Design and Innovation Project Competition 2021.

The project was shown at Garage@EEE Innovation Festival in 2022 and 2023, OneArena 2022 at Jewel, and NTU outreach visits. Bringing the individual components together into one working experience was the part of the project I was most proud of.
